Kickstarting Your Audio Engineering/Production Career
Selling Gigs on Social Media
Welcome to "The Ultimate Guide to Kickstarting Your Audio Engineering Career: Selling Gigs on Social Media" brought to you by Jackson Mixed It. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into key principles and strategies that can transform your passion for music production into a thriving business.
1. Offering Your First Service for Free:
One of the most effective ways to break into the market is by offering your skills for free initially. This not only showcases your talent but also allows potential clients to experience your work firsthand. Consider providing a free mix or consultation to demonstrate your value and build trust.
- Benefits:
- Attracts potential clients without a financial commitment.
- Demonstrates your skills and builds an initial portfolio.
- Sets the foundation for positive word-of-mouth referrals.
DO THIS: Draw 100 check boxes on a piece of paper and send out pitches to artists that you would like to work with. Copy this pitch: “Hey ___ , I love what you are doing! I am an up and coming ___ and would like to play a role in your vision. I am more than happy to give you your first ___ completely free of charge! How does that sound to you?” (It is important that you include the name of the artist)
2. Understanding the 3% Conversion Rule:
Recognize that only a small percentage of your outreach efforts will convert into paying clients. This means persistence is key. Continue reaching out to a broad audience, refining your approach based on feedback, and adapting your strategies for better results.
- Benefits:
- Helps manage expectations and maintain motivation.
- Encourages continuous improvement in outreach methods.
- Reinforces the importance of a consistent and persistent marketing strategy.
3. Producing Content to Expose Your Brand:
Content is king, especially in the digital age. Regularly produce engaging content that showcases your expertise, passion, and personality. This can include tutorial videos, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and highlights of your completed projects.
- Benefits:
- Increases visibility and reach on social media platforms.
- Establishes your brand as an authority in the audio engineering space.
- Engages your audience and fosters a sense of community.
DO THIS: Post 9 videos of you giving tips, mixing a song, producing a track, or talking about your journey. Make sure your studio set up is either in the background or the main focus of the video. You don’t need any special editing or video equipment. Simply film your computer screen with your phone.
I managed to get my first 10 paying clients while only having videos made with my cell phone
4. Building Trust Through Your Online Presence:
Craft a professional and authentic online presence. When potential clients visit your social media profiles, they should instantly trust that you are knowledgeable and capable. Highlight your achievements, share testimonials, and maintain a consistent brand image.
- Benefits:
- Instills confidence in potential clients.
- Differentiates you from competitors.
- Fosters a sense of credibility and reliability.
DO THIS: Represent who you want to be unashamedly. No matter who you are, the starting point will be cringey. Power through and understand that your work will create your name and reputation. The second one of your videos or songs gets the attention it deserves, you will feel all of that weight lifted off of your shoulders.
5. Transparency About Your Portfolio:
Be transparent about your journey and showcase your progress. Don't be ashamed of your current portfolio—embrace it. Even if you're just starting out, your unique perspective and skills set you apart from others.
- Benefits:
- Demonstrates growth and improvement over time.
- Attracts clients who appreciate your authenticity.
- Encourages a sense of relatability with your audience.
Even if you don’t like your portfolio, it showcases your work in its rawest form. This is how you set realistic expectations for your clientele and don’t get yourself in a situation where you cannot deliver.
6. Generosity and Responsiveness:
Be generous with your time and knowledge. Respond promptly to inquiries and engage with your audience. This not only builds a positive reputation but also fosters a sense of connection with potential clients.
- Benefits:
- Enhances your customer service reputation.
- Establishes a positive rapport with clients.
- Encourages repeat business and referrals.
7. Embracing Revisions and Client Concerns:
Understanding and addressing client concerns is crucial. Embrace revisions and demonstrate a willingness to collaborate. A satisfied client is more likely to become a repeat customer and recommend your services to others.
- Benefits:
- Builds long-lasting client relationships.
- Enhances your reputation for client satisfaction.
- Encourages positive word-of-mouth marketing.
My best mixes have resulted from receiving a client's revision requests with open arms.
PS: If they are requesting changes then it means they like it enough to have the job fully finished out.
8. The Holistic Approach:
Recognize that your role extends beyond creating music. A successful audio engineer or producer understands the importance of client relationships, effective communication, and a positive overall experience. Make your clients feel heard and involved in the creative process.
- Benefits:
- Encourages client loyalty and retention.
- Sets the foundation for positive referrals and testimonials.
- Establishes a holistic and client-centered approach.
DO THIS: Look for friends. Send out greetings on the holidays, check in on people, and understand that the person you are selling to is a human being just like yourself.
By implementing these principles, you're not just selling a service; you're building a brand, fostering relationships, and creating a sustainable career in audio engineering. Embrace the journey, stay persistent, and watch as your presence in the industry grows. Understand that money will always follow action, but how soon it follows is dependent on many micro factors.
I think it is safe to say that you are probably eager to make this happen, but I cannot stress enough that putting one foot in front of the other on a daily basis is the only thing that will guarantee some degree of success. So many times, while working a 9 to 5, I would get home and try to do everything at once in hopes of immediate payout, but only found myself frustrated. Rest in your confidence that it WILL happen because you know the work WILL be done.
